Hey there! It is that time of year again. For those of you spending your first winter here at Santee Court, or in downtown LA, we work with an outreach program each year to sponsor families transitioning from homelessness.  This year we are working with “Issues and Solutions” which is a local organization that focuses primarily on issues concerning the Skid Row area.  We are asking for donations of food, clothing and toys.

Last year the gifts of toys, clothing, and other greatly needed things was really amazing. Overwhelming in fact. Most of us were on the verge of tears. The kids receiving gifts were blown away, as were the parents, families and friends. This is a really awesome local fund raiser that we can all come together as a community around.

Thank you in advance for helping us, help local families in need.

For us it is a way to give to the community in a small way when things tend to be the hardest.  This year promises to be even more difficult than most and we aim to bring a little cheer to our neighbors of the Skid Row community who are struggling to stay off the streets.

A big thank you from Santee Court Lofts.

The Santee Court Holiday Fundraiser is our home communities way of helping local families in need.

If you would like to take part please consider donations of food, clothing, toys, and other fun AND needed items, to one of the three families we are helping to celebrate the Holiday Season.

This is tremendously important to me, and those at Santee Court Lofts. I can’t even explain the reaction we got last year when these families came to find the wonderful gifts we had gathered for them.

Essential oils, known as nature’s living energy, are the natural, aromatic volatile liquids found in shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. The distinctive components in essential oils defend plants against insects, environmental conditions, and disease. They are also vital for a plant to grow, live, evolve, and adapt to its surroundings. Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plant sources via steam distillation, and are highly concentrated and far more potent than dry herbs.

While essential oils often have a pleasant aroma, their chemical makeup is complex and their benefits vast—which makes them much more than something that simply smells good.

Historically, essential oils have played a prominent role in everyday life. With more than 200 references to aromatics, incense, and ointments throughout the Bible, essential oils are said to be used for anointing and healing the sick. Today, essential oils are used foraromatherapymassage therapyemotional healthpersonal carenutritional supplementshousehold solutions, and much more.

Young Living Essential Oils, the leading provider of essential oils, offers more than 300 essential oil singles and blends. All Young Living essential oils meet the YLTG standard. This means that every essential oil Young Living distills or sources has the optimal naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired effect. Only YLTG essential oils should be used for the primary methods of application, which includeinhalation and application.

Hi there.

I noticed a little comment from Brady Westwater in the queue with some information on the “Fashion Walk”.

Is downtown a new runway? Let’s find out, Fashion Walk is tonight.

<<Forwarded Message>>

Fashion Walk is Tonight

…. and it has the potential of becoming the next Art Walk by bringing much higher income buyers to our area each Third Thursday. But to make it happen – I need help in promoting it to everyone in both the fashion and the arts communities, Below is the website – and I would greatly appreciate it if you can invite everyone on your mailing lists to come Downtown between 5:30 and 10 PM tonight. There is a downloadable map on the website – just like Art Walk – and if you are around and could be open at least part of tonight – that would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

These eternal pests! They drive me, you, and everyone crazy! Buzzing in our ears, bites on the arms, legs, hands, feet, and on the face. Face bites are the worst, in my opinion. Little irritating flying insects and they are everywhere as you may have noticed.

The EPA has some suggestions for mosquito control.

What you can do to control mosquitoes around the home

  1. Remove their habitat (where they live and breed)
    • Eliminate standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys, or any other container where mosquitoes can breed.
    • Empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and potted plant trays at least once a week to destroy potential mosquito habitats.
    • Drain or fill temporary pools of water with dirt.
    • Keep swimming pool water treated and circulating.

Aside from these “environments” have you noticed them in other interesting places, like hanging out on your door waiting to get in? We have over here in the Brownstein-Louis building. They are tricky little suckers. Literally.

Be sure to check your door going in and out of your loft. A quick knock on the door before exiting or entering should shoo them away. Our windows are closed. For awhile I was wondering how they were getting in, until this little discovery.

Repellents

There are many recommended chemical repellents to prevent and control mosquitos, many of which we don’t want to use in the loft itself. I mean who wants to sleep in a residue of mosquito killer.

About.com has some suggestions you may try and some tips that may help to keep the bites down.

Natural Repellents

It’s very easy to make your own natural mosquito repellent. These natural products will effectively repel mosquitoes, but they require more frequent reapplication (at least every 2 hours) and higher concentrations than DEET. Because of the differences between types of mosquitoes, products that contain multiple repellents tend to be more effective than those containing a single ingredient. As you can see, natural repellents tend to be volatile plant oils.

  • Citronella Oil
  • Lemon Eucalyptus Oil
  • Cinnamon Oil
  • Castor Oil
  • Rosemary Oil
  • Lemongrass Oil
  • Cedar Oil
  • Peppermint Oil
  • Clove Oil
  • Geranium Oil
  • Possibly Oils from Verbena, Pennyroyal, Lavender, Pine, Cajeput, Basil, Thyme, Allspice, Soybean, and Garlic

Another plant-derived substance, pyrethrum, is an insecticide. Pyrethrum comes from the flowers of the daisy Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium.

THIEVES that works very well. Mixing a bit of the essential oil and putting it on the exposed skin will keep them away. At the loft we also drop it into the atomizer to reduce their tendency to want to get in, but applied topically THIEVES is really effective. It contains…

Thieves essential oil blend is a proprietary blend of:

  • Clove
  • Lemon
  • Cinnamon Bark
  • Eucalyptus
  • Rosemary

If you are interested in the Essential Oil, let me know. 🙂 I swear we wear this oil at night, mixed with some lotion before bed and the mosquitoes leave us alone!

Full article on About.com (article “How Things Work”) can be found here.

Remember to keep your windows and doors shut. Watch for those sheisty suckers on the door and avoid perfumes, scented lotions, heavy sweating and sun screens. Wash them off before bed because they are sweet scents for these blood suckers!

Just me,

Santee
