Van Ness Recovery House

Donate online to the Van Ness Recovery House in Los Angeles at:http://www.vannessrecovery.org/donations.html

The Van Ness Recovery House is a licensed and certified alcohol and drug recovery home designed to provide opportunities to the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender and heterosexual communities. All services are offered in both English and Spanish.

We provide a highly structured and safe environment, where the residents learn how to make healthy life choices while receiving direct experience with the 12 steps of recovery through an intense schedule of meetings, alcohol/drug education and discussion groups.

The House was opened in May 1973 as a Joint, co-operative effort of the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center (GLCSC) and a group of dedicated and visionary members of Alcoholics Anonymous. In 1976, the Van Ness Recovery House separated from GLCSC and became an independent non-profit corporation dedicated to serving the needs of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender and heterosexual men and women, regardless of their ability to pay, who suffer from the debilitating effects of the disease of alcoholism and/or drug addiction.

The Van Ness Recovery House opened a 20-bed facility on Beachwood Drive in 1973 and became aware of serving its first HIV-infected resident in 1984. The program has since served 1,632 HIV-infected residents. In the past five years, 61% of transgendered clients entering the program have been HIV-infected, 80% of all residents have been HIV-infected and over 86% of the residents have been homeless, having had little or no reportable income of the previous year. Over 2500 men and women have been given a new start in life thanks to a community that cares.

Our goals are simple and straightforward:

•Increase the length of abstinence from drugs and alcohol
•Decrease STD/STI occurrence
•Increase HIV and mental health medication adherence
•Increase the length of free time
•Develop an expanding network of culturally appropriate role models
•Increase employment rates
•Provide safer sex information and empowerment to the populations family/partners
•Create a replicable model program

The Van Ness Recovery Home does not discriminate in services or employment because of race, color, sex, age, national origin, handicap, sexual orientation or HIV antibody status. We would like to emphasize that although we largely target the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender community, we also have an extremely high success rate with our heterosexual clients.

I’ve finally finished the pieces for QueerArtWalk.org / the Downtown Art walk next Thursday.

Gentle, and not so gentleman, ladies and folks.

This is the story I created. Paralleling the death and resurrection process (Osris); the piecing together of life lost; the body awareness that remains from dismemberment. The awareness (peacock) of what was, what is, and what could be different than the life before.

Gathering.

The oldest mystery is the story of Osiris, son of Saturn, brother and husband of Isis, father of Horus, and brother to Typhon. Typhon kills Osiris and Isis retrieves the body in dissevered parts and Osiris is proclaimed arisen from the dead. Zoroaster brought this mystery to Persia, Cadmus brought it to Greece, Orpheus brought it to Thrace, and Melampus brought it to Athens.

— Henry Binkley Stein; Thirty Thousand Gods Before Jehovah

Once again I’ll post the info for this upcoming collaborative show.

WHO ARE THE SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE?

We are an Order of 21st Century Nuns dedicated to the promulgation of universal joy and the expiation of stigmatic guilt. Our ministry is one of public manifestation and habitual perpetration.

More simply put: we make people happy, stamp out guilt brought on by a judgmental society and help various organizations and charities, etc ….

Our goal is to embrace our gay and diverse selves and each other as we are today, as we were born and as we are meant to be. Our goal is to share kindness, love and laughter with those we have met, those we meet today and those we will meet tomorrow as a source of personal empowerment and pride.

We believe in freedom of expression, teamwork, effort, and diversity. We are a family, committed to social activism, social service and spiritual development.

The Order strives to strengthen its community through drag activism, by raising much-needed funds for community charities, and by bringing about a better understanding of gay spirituality.

The Sisters also work to unite the various factions of the Southern California lesbian and gay community and raise drag awareness among individuals, businesses, and organizations that are often ignorant or even hostile to members of the drag population.

Greetings!

I wanted to post some details about the August Art Walk that I, among others, are creating works of art and entertainment for. The Sister’s of Perpetual Indulgence have brought together a list of painters, sculptors, photographers, and entertainers in a benefit show for the Aids Project Los Angeles’s Crystal Methamphetamine Program and the Highways Art space. Two great benefactors for art and recovery.

I love benefit shows and that the benefit itself will take place at Art Walk central, right next to Bert Green Fine Art at The Exchange.

Among the flowering art you will find a series of casts that I am creating and painting that represent one’s piecing together of a life lost to drug abuse. The canvasses represent dismemberment and dissociation in their singularity, and rebirth through their coming together again to form the remnants of man. Piecing together his life. A series that come together signifying the gathering together of the aspects of ones life in recovery. This story parallels the myth of Asar (Osiris) after his dismemberment, before his resurrection. Aset (Isis) has pieced him together, in a sense she is the spirit that binds the pieces as they attempt new life.

I don’t know what all the art will be at the event but I do hope you will stop by to take a gander, talk to the sisters and view some, or all, of the art and performances, and music… maybe even make a donation or bid on one of the pieces for the benefit.

Details are below (thanks to the Queer Art Walk website): Time, date, place, silent auction, benefactors and a bit about the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and their great cause.

I will release a complete set of images that I am giving to the show in the next week or so. I still have a few casts to create and then a mediation on the spirit of their assembly.

I hope to see you there.

There has never been more worldwide attention on the creative culture of Los Angeles. People from all over the world came to LA for the opening of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum (BCAM) and the recent celebration of the 30th anniversary of MOCA, and are already planning for Pacific Standard Time in 2011. We are living in the city everyone is watching and visiting.

Spring, like art, is full of surprises. From fruit trees to desert festivals to cover artist Mark Bradford’s community advocacy, art grows in unexpected places. ForYourArt is pleased to announce its new publication, ForYourArt, which you can download here. Thanks to Ovation for its support. You can be a patron by knowing what’s going on and telling your friends.
