Well here we are at the end of twenty ten.

We’re not just rolling into a New Year, but a New Decade. We’ve spend the day cleaning house, organizing, setting tone and sense so that tomorrow when we rise, there is a newness to things. I even made a special batch of house spritz consisting of a few blends of essential oils: Abundance, Acceptance, Believe, and Theives.

Smells yum.

I hope your year was as colorful as mine and that you have a safe, super awesome New Year Celebration, whatever you are doing. One little thing I like to watch for is the first words spoken in a new year. I think that’s why we say “Happy New Year!” What will your first words be? What will your attitude be? What are you planning on doing tonight? Set the tone for the new year today, make it as close to what you would like to see made manifest in your life as possible. 🙂

I’ll see you next year.

Bright blessings.

Scott Lifencompass

Welcome back to Essentials.

In a continuing investigation we’re delving into the components and properties of Young Living (YL) Essential Oils, specifically their formulated blends. Designed with many purposes like emotional healing, attracting abundance, and lifting our vibrational frequencies, to name a few, we find that YL oils are far from simple air fresheners, and take aromatherapy to a new level of healing and use.

I also had some thoughts on the use of herbs magickally versus aromatherapeutically. Is there a difference? Does a plant essence create a different effect when used in Aromatherapy, versus traditional magickal purposes? There are, in some instances, many uses and folklore on herbs that are similar.  The primary focus of YL essential oils is aromatherapeutic. There does seem to be large shared purposes in both magickal practice and aromatherapy.

Which brings us to these posts, welcome to the Essentials.

We’re going to go through the blends first, they contain various essential oils, blended for a purpose. If I like the process, and IF it turns out that people enjoy the comparison, then I may dig into the single blends.

We continue our exploration with Acceptance.

Acceptance

Lately it seems that everything has become a process or resonance, for me the world is an emotionally and energetically tactile place if you feel it, if you accept what it is. Over the past few years of study this has sometimes proved difficult to digest. Parts  of me held on to… I don’t know, numbness, or a lack of “complete vision.” I don’t feel I was actually seeing the world even tho I was looking at things. Make sense?

Now it is as if most things I connect with can be accessed like a library, if I really take the time to resonate with it, the being of people, places, and things.

Acceptance is one of the many doorways. I want to say keys but it is more than a lock turning mechanism, it is part of the living experience. Do I have the words to justify the experience? I believe that this statement is true because it is practical when applied, and so it works, so whether I have the vocab or not it’s functional and in my book, “If it works, then it’s good.”

There is a concept that relates to this and I found it along the way, during the Journey, and that overwhelmingly was another realization that who I thought I was as an Individual, was in fact a part of a larger organism of life. In Buddhism this is called Anatman (Sanskrit), Anatta (Pali).

Arising from this, or in some Qabalistic thinking that we realize that these concepts do not rise one of out of the other but simultaneously existing and manifesting in the larger reality; What I am speaking of is our connection to all things: Oneness. It is the real blossom of compassion, perfect love and trust, because our acceptance, our door through to the sensual world brings about the openness to resonate and experience the great ‘self’ that is all that we experience, encounter, touch, taste, and smell, feel and know. What we will know. What we have known.

What does this have to do with an an essential oil? How can this benefit us with the concept of Acceptance? Through resonance and attunement.

With almost all things, including EO’s, I believe in working with the spirit or vibration first. Getting deep with myself and extending my senses into the essence, asking that it work for the betterment of my life, and through that life around me, and with the intent I wish to the essential oil for, in this case: Acceptance which would be my seed thought. This sets the stage for the working, naturally you should have already decided what you were attempting to accomplish in the degree that it most comfortable for you now.

Setting intentions, crafting affirmations, meditation, and prayer to focus yourself on your goal and inner-wisdom are all good tools. From there you can begin to explore the concept of acceptance through scent, touch, feeling and exploration using the essential oil as a catalyst -and a nicely scented on at that- to create the changes that are for your greater good.

Pushan Mudra Give and Take Gesture. By Phylameana lila Desy, About.com Guide

Mudra’s are a way to utilize our mind body connection, like the Witches Trigger, they can induce a state of mind that encapsulates the idea we are cultivating. Combined with breathing, focused meditation, and regular use Pushan can help us cultivate acceptance through contemplation of the give and take of life, and our self.

We can start with an oil, or many things but the important thing to remember is that tho we work witha method, the method is not the  meaning, that is found by our seeking self, individually. No oil, object, or person (IMO) can give you the answer, it is only found in the experience of living. Living is found in a lifetime and the things along the way, when we are attuned to our deeper self, become significant when we understand our connection to them, to us, that wholeness that is the entire being.

Cover of Essential Oils Desk Reference

(Acceptance) Stimulate the mind, compelling it to open and accept new things in life, allowing one to reach a higher  potential. It also helps to overcome procrastination and denial.

(Acceptance™ stimulates the mind with oils specially blended to promote feelings of accepting ourselves and others, regardless of perceived barriers).

Ingredients

Rosewood, almond oil base, geranium, frankincense, blue tansy, sandalwood and neroli.

Neroli (orange blossom) Thought to heal the mind, body, and spirit in ancient times. Neroli both strengthens and stabilizes the emotions and uplifts and inspires feelings of hopelessness, promoting confidence, courage, joy, peace, and sensuality.

Related to Neptune, fertility, love, with religious uses (historically), favored of Apollo, Gaea, and Hera. Paul Beyerl notes that the oranges have been associated with modern quests, used to strengthen the seeker or to reward the victorious. Blossoms can be used in weddings, having the magick of romance, and fertility. (Comp. Herbal Magick, Pg. 282)

In a sense the Neroli oil can be thought to bring the emotional body into a stable place.

From our post on Abundance:

Orange (Citrus sinensis) essential oil has a rich, fruity scent that lifts the spirit while providing a calming influence on the body. Orange brings peace and happiness to the mind.

In addition to their fertility property, oranges have been used for luck, divination, and you guessed it, money. The list of folklore and uses of orange could probably fill a library considering they found all over the world.

Sandalwood (Santalum album) has a rich, sweet, warm, and woody aroma that is sensual and romantic. Used traditionally as incense in religious ceremonies and for meditation, it is uplifting and relaxing. It is valued in skin care for its moisturizing and normalizing properties.

According to the Essential Oils Desk Reference, the fragrant influence of sandalwood enhance peace (sleep, relaxation). It stimulates the pineal gland and limbic system of the brain, the center of the emotions.

Blue Tansy (Tanacetum annuum), helps cleanse the liver and lymphatic system helping to overcome anger and negative emotions. Promotes a feeling of self-control. (E.O. Desk Reference, Pg. 94).

There are notes for older magickal uses in several tomes, including Tansy-associated funeral rites, asperging, and women’s mystery  rituals, celebrating womanhood. Several sources indicate that Tansy can be used in offensive magick, repelling insects, powers, and energies.

Could it be that Tansy is part of the mixture to “banish” or exorcise negative emotions.

Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora), is said to be empowering and emotionally stabilizing and used in a variety of blends like Acceptance, Joy, Harmony, and White Angelica. Similar to Ho Wood it offers a scent that brings about these emotional triggers.

Thought to boost the immune system and used in other mixtures to alleviate headache, and pain as an amplifier.

Rosewood connected to the heart, and love magick, (being South American), there is a relation to love but also boundaries, in it’s association with Venus and Saturn. I add tidbit because we’re talking about an essential oil that is to “open us to new things” and Saturn, “the great restrictor” finds a useful influence in this particular EO. Opening boundaries.

Rose Geranium.

Image via Wikipedia

Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) relates to memory and the nervous system, specifically in the release of tension and negative emotional memories. It’s fosters a sense of peace, well-being, and hope. (Aromatherapy). It’s anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antitumoral, to name a few. The Healthy Haven notes a use in Aphrodisiacs.

It is a rose scented herb, corresponding to the feminine, related to water, and the planet venus. Tho the color of the flower (parts) can be used for other purposes, there is a strong love association.

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) has a sweet, warm, balsamic aroma that is stimulating and elevating to the mind. Useful for visualizing, improving one’s spiritual connection, and centering, it has comforting properties that help focus the mind and overcome stress and despair. Frankincense is considered the holy anointing oil in the Middle East, where it has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years.

Seems to be another uplifting spiritual herb used to stimulate the mind and energize the energetic field. Frankincense and Myrrh have long been used together and as base for other incense.

Beyerl writes that Frankincense is associated with the Sun and used, as is Myrrh, with consecration, and in ceremony and ritual. There are other uses such as protection and purification, ritual working for “success” if the practitioner is balanced  in the spiritual and daily life.”

********

Having a cleansing quality on the Astral Self, or energetic body, used in combination with the other oils I’m thinking we might view the blend(Acceptance), as having multiple uses, but predominantly it could be used in healing emotional trauma through accepting what has happened, in relating with “difficult” people (family, relationships, etc), and broadening our mind to explore facets of our life that could be beneficial to our growth; places where we have closed doors on opportunity, love, growth, and forgiveness.

Application

Naturally Aromatherapy creates benefits through our sense of smell, stimulating our mind-body, but there are other methods of applying essential oils to ourself, and for magickal/energetic purposes.

For aromatic use. Diffuse or apply over the heart, on the wrists, behind the ears, on the neck and on the face.

Possible skin sensitivity. If pregnant or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Dilution not required; suitable for all but the most sensitive skin. Generally safe for children over 2 years of age.

In the past I’ve used other essential oils in our home, in the office, and around the halls of where we live. Spraying the essential oil around, mixing (roughly) about 6-10 drops of EO to a large spray bottle and generously spreading it around the area in the mix, can be a great immediate shift in the energy.

For example. Let’s say you were going to be doing a meditation or hands on healing for yourself or client. You could use Acceptance, along with other essential oils, to set the tone of the working. Water being related to healing, essential oils having a Yesod connection (and therefore the psychic/energetic framework connection), is an immediate and practical working tool that can be used to infuse the air with a vibration for opening to the work being done… especially when blocks are encountered.

I’ve used essential oils like this in the past to amplify a Reiki Attunement, working with Peace & Calming, Three Wise Men, and White Angelica to center, open up the spiritual paths, and strengthen the aura and attunment as it was passed. For the record it was probably one of the most intense attunements I’ve ever passed. You can read about that attunement here at Lifencompass: Easing Spiritual Blocks with Aromatherapy.

Again this is not an air freshener, and though the scent can stay in the air for hours I feel that it is more effective to wear the oil itself and/or diffusing the blend in the air with a proper essential oil diffuser (non-burning).

You can also use Acceptance in other ways such as in a small vial within a pouch or bag you have designed to open you to new ways of relating, new experiences for personal growth, or even in relationships that have become stagnant, challenging, or affairs where you are seeking to accept others. You can anoint candles for spell or ritual, baths, or just diffuse the oil into the air of your home.

A cost saving  method is to mix it with a base oil, lotion, or body spray that you prefer, these are highly-concentrated blends and a little does go a long way.

Welcome to Essentials.

It’s been awhile since I’ve written in any detail about essential oils and there are two reasons for that. First I had a few discussions with some (unfortunately) misinformed clients. Young Living Essential Oils are not air fresheners.

You could use them as “air fresheners” but honestly, it’s a bit expensive.

I also had some thoughts on the use of herbs magickally versus aromatherapeutically. Is there a difference? Does a plant essence create a different effect when used in Aromatherapy, versus traditional magickal purposes?

From these two thoughts came the idea: Write about the Essential Oils, compare their use, record the results.

Welcome to the Essentials.

We’re going to go through the blends first, they contain various essential oils, blended for a purpose. If I like the process, and IF it turns out that people enjoy the comparison, then I may dig into the single blends. We begin with Abundance.

Abundance

*From the Essential Oils Desk Reference,  Chapter 8, page, 93. Essential Science Publishing.

Increases the attraction of abundance and success. It enhances the frequency of the energy field that surrounds us through stimulation of the somatides. Somatides transmit frequency from the cells to the environment when stimulated through fragrance and thoughts. This frequency creates the “law of attraction,” a harmonic magnetic energy field around oneself.

When focusing on issues of abundance and inhaling this oil, a memory link of the RNA template is created where memory is blueprinted and permanently transcribed.

The Aromatherapeutic properties of the blend Abundance can help focus the mind to create the awareness of our power to “attract” what we want into our lives.

The “Law of Attraction” is really just fancy marketing wrapped around ancient principles: Magick. The Law of Attraction, derived from the Hermetic Principles, and has a modern living from the late 1800’s. My point being, many of these new practices are old practices and you find that they are often missing key elements or core principles that explain and educate.

All that said, I have used Abundance in a few ventures, including at the day job to increase various energies. Abundance doesn’t = money. It can be an abundance of anything unless the proper herbs / oils are brought together.

In this case that is my question, how is Abundance blended? Let’s see how this blend is put together.

Ingredients

Myrrh; Cinnamon Bark; Frankincense; Patchouli; Orange; Clove; Ginger; Spruce.

The EO Desk Reference has an encyclopedic list of essential oils and their uses. I’m going to go through each EO and cross-reference to some other herbal sources to see how Abundance adds up. Note I’m skipping “medical” uses unless blends / EO’s are recommended for medicinal uses.

Myrrh

Commiphora myrrha tree, one of the primary tre...

Commiphora myrrha tree | Image via Wikipedia

(Commiphora myrrha) Promotes spiritual awareness and is uplifting. It has sesquiterpenes wich stimulate the limbic system of the brain (the center of memory and emotions) and the hypothalamus, pineal , and pituitary glands.

So what we’re looking at here, from Young Living’s standpoint, is that the vibration of Myrrh is uplifting and carries a “spiritual frequency”.

Myrrh, according to Paul Bereyl has both masculine and feminine qualities. Related to the Sun, Moon, Adonis, Aphrodite, Cybele, Demeter, Hecate, Juno, Rhea, and Saturn. Used to Consecrate, in magick and spiritual practices to mark occasions such as funerals, rites, and ceremony.

Broadening our perception of energy, how it flows, and deepening our potential to connect to the mysteries.

Could that be a potential for connecting to the mysteries of “attraction?”

Frankincense

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) has a sweet, warm, balsamic aroma that is stimulating and elevating to the mind. Useful for visualizing, improving one’s spiritual connection, and centering, it has comforting properties that help focus the mind and overcome stress and despair. Frankincense is considered the holy anointing oil in the Middle East, where it has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years.

Seems to be another uplifting spiritual herb used to stimulate the mind and energize the energetic field. Frankincense and Myrrh have long been used together and as base for other incense.

Beryel writes that Frankincense is associated with the Sun and used, as is Myrrh, with consecration, and in ceremony and ritual. There are other uses such as protection and purification, ritual working for “success” if the practitioner is balanced  in the spiritual and daily life.”

Patchouli

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), sometimes called “the scent of the sixties,” has a musky, earthy, exotic aroma. In Eastern cultures, it is commonly used around the house to provide general support for health and to help release negative emotions. It is a relaxant that clarifies thoughts, allowing the discarding of jealousies, obsessions, and insecurities.

I love patchouli as it does have a cleansing property to it, however it can be quit dank.

Patchouli resonates with Pluto and Scorpio, and strangely appears to be used in spells for love, and as an aphrodisiac. However burnt it can be used to attract money, and promote “fertility”. Here we begin to see the “abundance” properties of the blend.

Orange

Meise (Belgium), National Garden of Belgium - ...

Image via Wikipedia

Orange (Citrus sinensis) essential oil has a rich, fruity scent that lifts the spirit while providing a calming influence on the body. Orange brings peace and happiness to the mind.

There is a link here with happiness and attitude. So not only is the blend including money in the properties of the oil but “happiness” as well. So the feeling of Abundance increases the power of the blend by stimulating the mind with the cheerful scent of orange.

In addition to their fertility property, oranges have been used for luck, divination, and you guessed it, money. The list of folklore and uses of orange could probably fill a library considering they found all over the world.

Clove

(Syzygium aromaticum) doesn’t seem to have a YL listing for abundant usage but does show that it stimulates a feeling of protection and courage, “stimulating” being a key word.

Magickaly speaking clove appears to have association with money magick, as well as attracting lovers and insight through visions, and dreams.

Ginger

(Zingiber officinale)

Photographer: Frank C. MĂĽller

Ginger | Image via Wikipedia

Young Living lists ginger as another stimulant with qualities associated for potency (fertility).

References abound for ginger but it does seem to have been used in both attraction and money magick.

Paul Beyrel notes a resonance with Mars and that the herb is strongly associated with one’s health, with uses in magick that both strengthen and empower consecrated items.

Spruce

(Picea mariana) “Spruce (Picea mariana) is softer and sweeter in aroma than other evergreen oils. It is refreshing, invigorating, and strengthening. It also has a long history of use in the sauna, steam bath, and as an additive to baths or massage oils. It is supportive of the respiratory and nervous systems.*”

Spruce is included in one of my all time favorite EO blends, Valor. I use valor soap and I apply the oil to my feet and temple after bathing. It’s SO stabilizing, lifting up the vibration while encouraging as sense of being grounded.

Well it seems that I don’t know a hill of beans about spruce, and it doesn’t seem (upon searching various sites) that I was able to find any spell related qualities of the evergreen. I personally feel that it (spruce) is related to the earth, the lungs (breath, air), grounding (manifesting), and cleansing.

I’ll take a weigh-in by anyone familiar with usage of Spruce for spells / magick, naturally.

*********

So when I do add up the ingredients magickal vs. aromatherapeutic, it seems that Abundance is formulated for the very purpose of attracting money, wealth, and to lift the energy of one’s personal field by invigorating the mind, body and spirit.

Application

Naturally Aromatherapy creates benefits through our sense of smell, stimulating our mind-body, but there are other methods of applying essential oils to ourself, and for magickal/energetic purposes.

For aromatic use. Diffuse or wear on wrists and behind ears as a perfume.

With almost all things, including EO’s, I believe in working with the spirit or vibration first. Getting deep with myself and extending my senses into the essence, asking that it work for the betterment of my life, and through that life around me, and with the intent I wish to the essential oil for. This sets the stage for the working, naturally you should have already decided what you were attempting to manifest. With Abundance we would be looking for more money, income, or business (resulting in income) and be clear about the direction you would like for this to appear.

In the past I’ve used Abundance in the office, as I said then we anointed stones by the door, and sprayed the essential oil around the office mixing (roughly) about 6-10 drops of EO to a large spray bottle and generously spreading it around the area in the mix.

Again this is not an air freshener, and though the scent can stay in the air for hours I feel that it is more effective to wear the oil itself and/or diffusing the blend in the air with a proper essential oil diffuser (non-burning).

You can also use Abundance in other ways such as in a small vial within a pouch or bag you have designed to attract more money. You can anoint candles for spell or ritual. You can trust your intuitive tug while and experiment with new ways to attract more money and “Abundance” into your life.

Interesting little tid-bit that popped up in my google searches the other day that I thought you might like. Well at least our aromatically inclined holistic types. 🙂

((ARTICLE EXCERPT))

Aromatherapy to ease labour pains

Friday 21st May 2010

Women in labour are being offered relaxation and massage with essential oils as a natural pain-relief technique by midwives trained in aromatherapy at North Bristol NHS Trust.

The techniques help ease labour pains, sickness, muscle aches and anxiety, and are being offered by a group of 24 midwives at Bristol’s Southmead Hospital’s birth suite, as well as to those who choose home births.

Midwives have been taught how to mix oils and use their properties to relieve symptoms. Bergamot, clary sage, jasmine, lavender, peppermint, frankincense and grapefruit are the seven basic oils the midwives use, which are then mixed to a base oil.

Up to three oils can be included in a mixture as appropriate to relieve the symptoms and can be applied through a drop on the hand, a compress to the skin, in a foot bath or by infusion through inhalation.

Naturally we play a lot with the Young Living Essential Oils. Finding ways to stretch their use, and experimenting with the effects. I love Thieves not only for its smell but for its naturally antibacterial, antiseptic, and antifungal properties. At home and at the office I have little bottles that I use to spray phones, handles, and other high traffic surfaces.

I think I found a new and wonderful combination. For the last two weeks I’ve been using a mixture: Believe, Joy, and Peace & Calming. Use a small spray bottle, we have an 8 oz spray bottle and add 4 drops of Joy, 4 drops of Believe, and 4 drops of Peace & Calming. Slowly pour in some medium hot water, being careful not to overfill and lose the oils, cap, shake vigorously, and spray.

It smells fantastic.

What I’ve noticed, aside from the welcoming smell that the blend creates, is that our vibe lifts. These three oils in combination create a stabilizing, uplifting and “exciting” reaction. Over the last few weeks I’ve seen and felt the effects of this combination, at home and at work. As I’ve noted before Peace & Calming has the desired effect.

“Peace & Calming® is a gentle, fragrant blend. When diffused, it helps calm tensions and uplift the spirit, promoting relaxation and a deep sense of peace. When massaged on the bottoms of the feet, it can be a wonderful prelude to a peaceful night’s rest.”

Joy and Believe, one of my new favorite blends, together create an essential optimism. The two together are “Light” in a tangible way.

I’m so excited for the blend I’m thinking of launching a little charged batch of the bunch! (Stay tuned).

About the Essential oils

Peace & Calming
Tangerine (Citrus nobilis), orange (Citrus aurantium), ylang ylang (Cananga odorata), patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) and blue tansy (Tanacetum annuum).

Peace & Calming® is a gentle, fragrant blend. When diffused, it helps calm tensions and uplift the spirit, promoting relaxation and a deep sense of peace. When massaged on the bottoms of the feet, it can be a wonderful prelude to a peaceful night’s rest. Peace & Calming may be especially calming and comforting to young children after an overactive and stressful day.

Joy

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia), ylang ylang (Cananga odorata), geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora), lemon (Citrus limon), mandarin (Citrus reticulata), jasmine (Jasminum officinale), Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii), and rose (Rosa damascena).

Joy™ is a luxuriously exotic blend with uplifting overtones that creates magnetic energy and brings joy to the heart. When worn as cologne or perfume, Joy exudes an alluring and irresistible fragrance that inspires romance and togetherness. When diffused, it can be refreshing and uplifting.

Believe

Idaho Balsam Fir (Abies grandis), rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) and frankincense (Boswellia carteri).

Believe™ is an uplifting blend of essential oils that has a steadying, balancing effect on emotions, helping you to overcome feelings of despair and move beyond them to a higher level of awareness. It helps release the unlimited potential everyone possesses, making it possible to experience health, happiness, and vitality more fully. Believe can also provide feelings of strength and faith.

And I’m thinking, after a Lunar-Charge on the Altar, this might be a lovely thing to produce… Limited batches, but good none-the-less.
